St. Agrestis

Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY

Amaro

St. Agrestis started as a cult obsession. Two sommeliers came back from three months in Italy in 2014 with one goal: make a proper American amaro. The result built a following in Brooklyn bars before the founders shifted focus, and the brand nearly disappeared. In 2017, brothers Louis and Matt Catizone — sons of an Italian immigrant father and a first-generation Brooklyn Italian mother — partnered with spirits veteran Steven DeAngelo to rescue and relocate it to Greenpoint. What they brought to 233 Eagle Street is a working distillery that does everything in-house, from maceration through bottling. The flagship amaro pulls from twenty herbs, spices, flowers, and roots, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, landing somewhere between old-world Italian bitter and distinctly New York. Alongside the amaro and aperitivo line, the team has become equally known for their non-alcoholic Phony Negroni, a genuine zero-proof cocktail rather than a token placeholder. On weekends, the tasting room opens up and you can try the full range alongside negronis and spritzes on tap, with the distillery floor visible through the whole experience. It's a short walk from the G train in a neighborhood full of small-batch makers, and the crowd reflects that.
