Clayton Distillery
Clayton, NY
Clayton Distillery sits right on Route 12 in Clayton, New York, in the heart of the Thousand Islands region — and it was the area's first micro-distillery when founder Mike Aubertine opened it in April 2013. Aubertine grew up on a dairy farm in nearby Cape Vincent, sold his architectural firm to chase this idea, and built something that genuinely reflects the region: spirits made from locally sourced grains, produced in small batches with an eye toward getting better every year.
The lineup is broad and a little unexpected. You'll find a clean flagship vodka alongside a garlic-flavored version that regulars swear by, a Navy-strength gin called Shoal Finder, and a solid NY Straight Bourbon Whisky that's become one of their best sellers. There's also a Bottled-in-Bond Corn Whisky, maple whisky, lemonade shine in both 48 and 101 proof versions, and a handful of fruit liqueurs. Over a dozen options in total.
When you visit the tasting room, you can work your way through a flight at the bar or just order a cocktail. The first three tastings are free, and additional pours are priced to keep things accessible. The staff knows the products well and tends to be generous with suggestions. It's a low-key, friendly spot — and yes, bring your dog.
