Judson & Moore sits inside a restored 19th-century leather tannery along the Chicago River in Avondale, and every detail of the place reflects that history - exposed brick, heavy timber framing, and a bartop hewn from the family home's oak. The family-run distillery was founded in 2018 by entrepreneur Judson Bergman, his daughter Elise, and her husband Collin Moore, a distiller and engineer who spent years perfecting four whiskey expressions before opening to the public in 2022. The lineup - Rye, Bourbon, Red Corn Bourbon, and Single Malt - is sourced from Midwestern organic grain (much of it from Cow Creek Farm in Paxton, Illinois) and aged in Minnesota white oak barrels. All four took home medals at the 2024 Bartender Spirits Awards, and the Bourbon took gold. You can taste through the whole range at the bar, catch live music on weekends, or book a Saturday distiller's tour that takes you from the mill room through the still room and barrel storage, ending with a guided flight. The surrounding Rockwell on the River complex puts Metropolitan Brewing, Soul & Smoke barbecue, and Metropolis Coffee right next door - making this a full afternoon if you want it to be.
