Kennay Farms Distilling
Rochelle, IL
Kennay Farms Distilling sits inside a completely rebuilt historic theatre on the Lincoln Highway in Rochelle, and the setting alone is worth the trip. The tasting room perches above the production floor, giving you a clear view of the stills and fermenters below as you work through their lineup.
What makes this place stand out is how genuinely farm-to-glass the operation is. The Kennay family has farmed this part of north-central Illinois for six generations, and they now grow, mill, and distill everything themselves. When you taste their 100% corn vodka or their five-year-plus bourbon, you're drinking something that started as grain on family land worked for over a century.
The spirits range from a clean, juniper-forward gin that took a silver medal at the Denver International Spirits Competition in 2019, to rye whiskey with sweet-and-spicy notes, to small-batch and double-oaked expressions for whiskey fans who want more complexity.
Hours are limited - Fridays and Saturdays only - so Kennay runs less like a bar you drop into on impulse and more like a destination you plan around. If you're making a road trip along the Lincoln Highway, this is a natural stop. The staff is typically family, which means you get the real story behind the farm and the spirits rather than a rehearsed pitch.
