Tucked into the Catskill Mountains along Route 28, Union Grove is a family-run farm distillery that turns local New York ingredients into genuinely interesting spirits. Brian and Penny Mulder started it in 2016 with a simple rule: at least 75% of every bottle comes from New York. Their flagship Vly Creek Vodka, distilled from apples and wheat, picked up a Gold Medal and Best of Category at the 2017 American Distilling Institute competition and landed on Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Spirits list in 2019. The Catskill Mountain Maple Spirit is the other standout, a lightly sweet, woodsy pour that draws comparisons to a good bourbon. Brian, who competed on Discovery Channel's Moonshiners: Master Distiller, runs tours himself during tasting room hours, walking you through the whole production process before sending you to the copper-topped bar for craft cocktails, New York ciders, and cold beers. There's no kitchen, but you're welcome to bring a picnic or wait for the occasional food truck. The space is fully wheelchair accessible, and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming -- this is not a slick urban operation, it's a working farm distillery where the person who made your drink will probably be the one pouring it.
